Mission

SHIM’s mission as an interfaith organization is to actively extend God’s love with dignity and respect to the people of the South Hills of Pittsburgh.

SHIM is dedicated to meeting the needs of South Hills’ residents by providing the desired assistance with loving kindness and respect for the dignity, strengths and privacy needs of each Individual.  SHIM’s core programs focus on three primary aspects:  suburban poverty, refugee assistance and interfaith dialogue.

SHIM’s Core Values

Stewardship
Managing the resources and gifts that are bestowed upon SHIM in a responsible manner.

Empowerment

Fostering self-sufficiency in all of the programs and services that SHIM provides.

Dignity
Treating all those we serve in a compassionate manner as we realize that we are all more alike than we are different.

Faith

Recognizing God’s love for everyone regardless of their faith belief.

Our Beginnings

Have you heard about the priest, the rabbi and the minister getting together?  It really happened and that is how SHIM was born!  “When the (South Hills Village) Mall was being built, we were aware that suddenly the corn fields were giving way to creating an ‘inner city’ in our midst, the center of a large influx of people.  And where there are people, there is human need. And where there is need, the religious community should be prepared to serve.” Thus Rev. Dr. John H. Galbreath, then pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, explained that situation that caused him to convene a meeting with Msgr. Rooney of St. Thomas More and Rabbi Sajowitz of Temple Emanuel of South Hills and through their shared vision SHIM began in 1968.
